A huge thank you to the University of Derby for hosting such a brilliant careers fair this week. It was a pleasure to meet so many enthusiastic Geology and Environmental Science students who were genuinely excited about the opportunities within the Ground Investigation and Engineering Geology sector.
The energy and curiosity from the students were fantastic! From thoughtful questions about fieldwork and drilling operations to conversations about career pathways, professional development, and what day-to-day life in the GI industry really looks like. It’s always inspiring to see the next generation of geo-scientists so eager to learn and get involved.
Our engineering geologists Georgina White and Rebecca Jenkins even brought along a small challenge! A “Guess the Rock Type” game using a selection of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic samples. Students had great fun testing their identification skills and a few lucky winners walked away with a prize! It was a brilliant way to spark discussion and see their geological knowledge in action.

Events like this make a real difference in helping students understand the variety of roles available and how their academic skills translate into industry.
Looking forward to the next one!
Top Tips for Students and Graduates:
Demonstrate Your Curiosity and Problem-Solving Mindset
- In interviews, talk about times you solved problems in the field or during mapping projects.
- Share examples where you adapted to challenges, GI is all about unexpected ground conditions.
- Display interest in real-world applications: infrastructure, slope stabilization, environmental remediation
