Rig capabilities & specifications

Our rigs are owned, operated and maintained in-house from our facilities in Gloucester. Each of the rigs has its own specification, and in some cases, we have multiple rigs of the same make and model.  If you need advice about the best rig for your project, get in touch.

All of our rigs have a unique QR code which allows our clients and staff to access all of the necessary compliance documentation.  That includes calibration certificates and certificates of thorough inspection, making audits a dream.

Our Fraste multi-purpose drilling rigs are ideal for geotechnical and geo-environmental site investigations. The rigs are capable of drilling boreholes using conventional rotary coring and wireline Geobor S,  up to 100m in depth. With in-situ calibrated standard penetration testing (SPT) and undisturbed sampling (U70, U100 and UT100). Class 1 samples (EN ISO 22475-1) can be prepared from the core by one of our engineering geologists.

Dando D3000

Cable percussion rig

Operated by a two-person crew, the CP rig is versatile and cost-effective at drilling geotechnical boreholes in larger diameters through made ground and coarse superficial deposits achieving depths of 70 to 80m.

  • Rigs upgraded with the latest safety features, including;
    • an electric auxiliary winch for safer, more controlled raising and lowering,
    • fully guarded clutch/brake and winch drum,
    • rope whip check bar and
    • guarded exhaust.
  • D2000 (13kW) and D3000 mk.2 (15kW) diesel engines London LRMM Low Emission Zone exempt.;
  • D2000 and D300 derricks are approximately 7m high when set up.
  • Wide range of casing diameters available from 12” (300mm) through to 6” (150mm), allowing clean drilling/aquifer protection measures on environmentally sensitive sites.
  • Non-magnetic, stainless-steel casing is also available.

Having our own cable percussive rigs makes arranging rotary follow on much easier and less time delays for our clients.

Dando Terrier 2002

Dynamic sampling rig

A small 1-tonne rig capable of drilling up to 12m in soft soils using a duplex-cased dynamic sampling system.  Operated by a two-person crew, it is a great way of rapidly forming site investigation boreholes.

  • Self-propelled rubber track-mounted rig. Min. access width 0.9m. Min. working height 3.0m.
  • 34HP diesel engine fitted with Chalwyn valve and spark arrestor for safe use in fuel forecourt environments.
  • Detachable mast assembly for remote operation in areas of restricted access, or alternatively use our LMSR modular dynamic sampling rig.
  • Capable of collecting category A samples from UT70 sample tubes in appropriate soils.
  • Fully calibrated Standard penetration testing, DPSH & DPH
  • Separate bolt-down coring unit providing up to 300mm dia. cores through concrete or tarmacadam hardstanding.

LMSR-H

Modular dynamic sampling rig

Our LMSR-H modular dynamic sampling and probing rig provides the perfect solution for drilling at limited access sites such as on the railway, basements, the crest or foot of a slope, inside buildings or any other areas inaccessible to tracked, or wheeled, rigs.

The components of the rig are carried to the borehole and then re-assembled; it has the same basic capabilities as our larger track-mounted Terrier rigs, using the same duplex-cased dynamic sampling system, it can achieve depths of up to 10m depth

  • Approximate footprint of the rig is 2m by 2m when assembled — minimum working height of 2.15m.
  • Provide fully calibrated heavy and super heavy dynamic probing in accordance with EN ISO 22476-2.

Vector HDD650S

Vacuum excavator unit

Our Vector HDD650 vacuum excavation system uses a high-power vacuum suction system to excavate soils or other materials during ground investigation projects. It is mounted on a 7.5-tonne flatbed and has a separate 36hp diesel engine. The system is intrinsically safe with a shutdown button, chalwyn valve (positive air shut-off) and spark arrestor.

Typical applications:

  • Safe excavation of borehole inspection pits prior to mechanical drilling
  • Slit trenches or pits to expose and positively identify services
  • Safe excavation in contaminated materials
  • Allows excavation in areas inaccessible to larger plant
  • Well installation to depths of 2m
  • Railway ballast removal

Vacuum excavation can reduce the risk of damaging buried services, including cables, pipes, drains and culverts. It also allows for excavation in areas of a site otherwise inaccessible to traditional plant. This technology can also be used as an alternative to manual hand digging, protecting site operatives by reducing manual handling and increasing the rate of progress for an excavation programme.
